As soon as you arrive at the main square of the medieval castle of Bragança, you will hear Taberna do Javali before you see it. Music fills the large sun-filled terrace and surroundings with a cool-and-summery vibe which you don't usually find in castles and other historical monuments. It creates a light and relaxed atmosphere.
Whatever your mood is, Taberna do Javali is a brilliant place to stop by: it has the quality and service of a restaurant but also the vibe of a lively happening bar. And even better? The view. After climbing up to the heart of historical Bragança, you can enjoy the beautiful view over the city and surrounding countryside. The terrace offers shade and sunny spots and is generally a fantastic place to be on a nice day. And if the weather is chilly, that's fine — the inside room is light and comfortable.
If you happen to be visiting Javali in the afternoon, it's definitely worth staying a bit longer to enjoy the sunset over the city.
"Javali" means boar. Naturally meat is a very important ingredient in a restaurant called by the name of an animal. The pork dishes are particularly tasty. Typical ingredients, such as chestnuts, mushrooms and the "alheira" sausage, perfectly combined showcase the traditional dishes of the Trás-os-Montes region.
Ball of “Alheira” (a traditional Portuguese sausage) with apple and jam.
Bistro pork loin, mustard and sweet potato.
Homemade hamburger.
This restaurant during summer tend to become touristic. The good news is: there are in fact two Javali restaurants run by the same family. The second one is about ten minutes drive from Bragança on the N103-7, and it can be a good alternative. According to the locals, this was the original restaurant, but both are worth a visit. Arrive hungry, the portions are massive.
